Measuring
your site area is easy, but arriving at an accurate estimate
is obviously very important! Your goal is to order enough
for full ground coverage. All
you need is a measuring tape, a pencil and a drawing pad.
If
the coverage area is square or rectangular:
- Measure
the length and width of the area where you want to lay sod.
- Then,
multiply the length by the width to get the number of square
feet in the area.
If
the area is a triangular shape:
- Measure
the area as though it is square or rectangular.
- Multiply
to get the square footage and then
- Divide
by two since triangles are half the area of a square or
rectangle.
If
the area is circular, a simple method is
to:
- Find
the full width of the circular coverage area
- Divide
the full width by 2 to determine what is called the “radius”
- Multiply
the radius (number calculated above) by itself
- Lastly,
multiply by 3.14 (value of pi)
Other
shapes (polygons): Because all coverage
areas are not perfect geometrical shapes, you may need
to use a combination of the formulas above to get a fairly
accurate estimate of the whole area coverage. For example,
the following polygon shape is a combination of a half
circle and a rectangle.

We
would be more than happy to assist you with your calculations
if you wish. Simply sketch the shape of the coverage area
on a drawing pad, add your measured dimensions to your drawing
and let us go over them with you…we’ve been doing
this a long time!
Since
timing of soil preparation and the actual laying of the sod
is important, let us know when your coverage area will be
ready to lay your sod. We will have your order ready for you
at that time. |
